No matter how much you want to keep your figure nice and svelte, let’s face it. As unhealthy as Malaysian food can be, it is REALLY HARD to give it all up. Our glorious cuisine is so delicious nothing else compares, but it is also full of refined carbs, sodium, MSG, and saturated fat! In case you pretended not to notice what I just said, it is REALLY BAD for you!
Yet, most people in this country would rather die from eating a plate of Char Kuay Teow than live to be a hundred scarfing down steamed broccoli.
So when the food is worth dying for, what can you do to make better choices for your health and wellness?
For an optimist like KKMOI, there’s always a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow if you follow the arch.
Today’s arch is called JNL (Joseph’s Nasi Lemak) and the pot of gold is a place that you can go for economy rice that is ‘MSG-free.’
Brown Rice as an Option, What a Concept!
Here’s the brilliant part. JNL offers BROWN RICE as a option!!! Now I don’t mean to slag off restaurants who are selling cooked brown rice dishes for RM12 – RM20 per serving, but when I can get a set complete with meat and veg for RM6 from Uncle Joe’s, I am going there every chance I get. Check out the brown rice nasi lemak I got below. (There’s normal nasi lemak too, but I wanted to have the healthier brown rice!)
The JNL Experience
It’s not for superficial reasons that I love JNL. It’s pretty much a shack by modern standards and this little half a shop lot is not a suitable place to have a sit down dinner, unless you’re flying solo. This is takeaway heaven, and it isn’t noticeable if you are not looking for it. Their display cabinet faces a wall, with a narrow walkway to stand while you order and to get through to the 3 tables at the back.
No MSG Added
I love JNL because they have close to 20 different mixed economy rice dishes, all cooked without MSG and you have the option of getting BROWN RICE! GLORY! Dishes like curry chicken, stirfried broccoli, eggplant, pork trotters, sesame pork ribs, and many more choices. Their 3-in-1 combo like the 2 veg + 1 meat combo goes for RM6 and goes up to RM9 depending on what you choose.
I really like the idea of spending between RM6 to RM10 for a simple post-workout meal and JNL is a no-nonsense, simple place to get what I want – clean protein and carbs. It’s fabulous that I can eat better carbs that are lower in GI. Jasmine white rice has a GI of 100, while brown rice is only 55, about half of that. This means you are less likely to get sugar highs and crashes and your insulin levels will be more stable!
JNL is open daily from 2:00pm to 8:00pm. Joseph, the owner, also offers catering services. If you’re interested, give him a call at:-
If you head there, do tell him you read about JNL on the internet via KKMOI.COM.
