Have you ever had blue rice?
If not, let me tell you a story about what this couple does with their clitorias!
Yes, you read that right!
And if you read it out loud, you heard yourself right, too.
It was named specifically after the lady bit because it looks like that… lady bit! Even if you think it looks nothing like your bit, the name is not negotiable – some botanist already laid claim on the scientific name, so to be more prudent, you’re better off calling them by their Malay name Bunga Telang.
Using the Bunga Telang or Butterfly Pea Flowers to color food is nothing new. In fact, it is used mostly in Northern Malaysia by the Kelantanese to make Nasi Kerabu, and the Nyonyas to make their famous blue kuehs. The Thais also use this to make a tea called nam dok anchan (น้ำดอกอัญชัน). Although the flowers are a tropical plant and exist in Borneo, up until recently, you could not find Nasi Kerabu in Sabah. That is until uncle Uncle Garry showed up!
Meet Uncle Garry and his wife Renne!
Exactly a year ago, this couple from Taman Jindo started a home-based hobby and small-scale catering business producing contemporary Malaysian favorites to order. They feature the blue extract of Butterfly Pea Flowers that they grow in their garden! (P.S.: Now they have moved to Dah Yeh Villa)
Nasi Kerabu Sabah
Their most popular item is the Nasi Kerabu Sabah, which is their own take on the Northern Malaysian dish. They cost RM10 per portion, and you have to put in a minimum order of 10 to experience this delicious food. The options right now are fried chicken or fried fish. They offer free delivery to Damai Plaza, Lintas Plaza, Kepayan Perdana, Beverly Hills, Metro Town, Taipan Inanam, KK Times Square, Oceanus Mall, Imago, Center Point Sabah, Wisma Merdeka and Suria Sabah.
Besides the visual effect of the blue, Bunga Telang has been long used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to treat a variety of ailments. Scientific research points to anti-microbial properties, and extracts contain anthocyanins, a known antioxidant.
This catering business is a personal passion of theirs and they recently moved to Dah Yeh Villa from Taman Jindo. Uncle Garry and Renee have full-time jobs, and so they only offer this on Thursday, Friday and Saturday only. To order, please contact Uncle Garry here:-
