Roast Pork Rice at Kedai Kopi Gunung Emas 金嶺茶餐室

While one can get Cantonese roasted meats in most urban cities in the world, there really are only a handful of places on earth that serve the best roasted meats, and Gunung Emas (Kim San) is one such contender. If there was going to be a coffee shop popularity contest, this bustling kopitiam in Bornion would come up in the top three in Kota Kinabalu.

This stall’s success can be credited to a mix of showmanship and taste, as the proprietor stands behind the chopping board to chop up every plate of roasted meat rice he sells with skillful speed. He opens no more than 2.5 hours everyday (from 11:30am to 2:00pm), and this is because his ingredients systematically run out after selling hundreds of plates.

Usually the siew yoke goes first, charsiu second, and the roasted chicken last. It’s as if he makes the roasted chicken solely to appease those who show up disappointed. Thankfully for me, I managed to get a charsiu and siew yoke rice combo because I got there early!

Not sure if it’s legal to call it the “devil’s elixir” but the sauce they gave on the side compels pure hedonism. It tastes like a reduction of lard, sweet soy sauce, molasses and wine, flamed over high heat to get that bit of smoked taste. That’s what my tongue tells me, but the ratio of what-and-when that goes into it is in their trade secret. Hmm, I wonder if they’ll tell KKMOI? *being delusional*

You would be tasting a bit of heaven on earth as the beautiful texture and taste of the fatty pork melts in your mouth. It’s so good you’ll forget the health warnings associated with saturated fats.

The problem with being so good is that people flock to the shop like flies, making it really difficult to get a table, order and be served. There’s also a long line for takeaway. So while we highly recommend Gunung Emas for lunch, we do it with a caveat; provided you can get a parking spot and hog a table before the lunch crowd trivializes your attempt! P/S: Get there before noon.
