Top 5 Places for Hakka Tofu in KK

Top 5 Places for Hakka Tofu in KK

NON-HALAL
In Sabah where Hakka people are aplenty, tofu is more often eaten stuffed with meat. As a Hakka girl, I eat tofu as often as Indians have curry and thus have developed a very acute sense of discernment. After eating at a lot of places that are known for their economy tofu over the course of the year, I have curated and hereby present you with the KKMOI top 5 favorites. Caveat: Expect the coffee shop ambiance to be a little low-brow and rowdy.

Here’s how I judged the beancurds.

JUDGING CRITERIA

For each criterion, the stuffed tofu may score a total of two points. Points are awarded from a scale of 0.0-2.0 per criterion. Decimals will be used to get the most accurate rating. The maximum total score is 10.

# 5 – Kedai Kopi Yun Heng Baru, Bornion

Coming in on #5 is a dark horse. Yun Heng Baru is located at Bornion, right in the center on the same block as KFC. Very few people think about coming here for tofu, but at about 2:30pm this place serves Kinchi Mee and Hakka Nyong Tofu. They don’t make a lot, so they run out of food pretty fast. Admittedly the coffee shop is pretty decrepit looking, but their tofu here is nice when eaten steaming hot. (Apologize for the crappy picture. The last 2 pieces I got my hands on were structurally compromised!) Available daily from 2:30pm – 4:00pm

Criteria Points Comments
Silkiness/Texture of beancurd 1.7 Pretty smooth. Best eaten hot.
Softness of beancurd 1.7 Soft and moist. It was lovely!
Taste of beancurd 1.6 Faint bean taste
Taste of meat stuffing and gravy 1.6 Passes our taste test
Texture of meat stuffing 1.6 Not too bad, but could be better

Total Score:

8.2/10

Gotta eat it hot.

# 4 – Kuo Man, Sunny Garden

Coming it at No. 4 is Kuo Man’s tofu. We’ve only ever got our hands on it twice during our many visits, because they run out of tofu by 9:00am. The times that we’ve had it, we have loved how soft and delicate it is. Available daily from 7:00am – 8:30am

Criteria Points Comments
Silkiness/Texture of beancurd 1.8 It’s one of the best texture we’ve come across with local tofu.
Softness of beancurd 1.8 Very, very nice.
Taste of beancurd 1.8 No noticeable raw soybeans or smell from the gypsum (calcium sulfate). A good thing!
Taste of meat stuffing and gravy 1.7 The tofu is better than the meat filling.
Texture of meat stuffing 1.6 More processed, less chunky

Total Score:

8.7/10

Sells out before 9:00am. Go really early!

# 3 – Success Delicatessen, Sunny Garden

We have eaten at least 600 pieces of tofu at Success Deli and can tell you they definitely deserve to win the title for ‘MOST POPULAR TOFU IN KK.’ Unfortunately, the total scoring was slightly lower than 2 other establishments, hence they came in at No. 3. Still one of the best in town! Available daily from 7:00am – 1:00pm

Criteria Points Comments
Silkiness/Texture of beancurd 1.8 Very “homemade” quality. The tofu doesn’t separate well but that’s what we like about it. Not boring.
Softness of beancurd 1.8 Very, very nice.
Taste of beancurd 1.9 Yummy!
Taste of meat stuffing and gravy 1.8 We like the gravy. The meat could be bigger though.
Texture of meat stuffing 1.7 Chunky-style.

Total Score:

9.0/10

The tofu that you can eat everyday without getting sick of!

# 2 – Jia Xiang, Lintas

Taufupok is not expected to be silky. Instead, it is sponge-like, with holes and pits to suck and retain the juices from the braised meat and gravy. It is different from the rest of the tofu on this list, but is still a stuffed Hakka tofu. Available daily from 7:00pm – 12:00pm

Criteria Points Comments
Silkiness/Texture of beancurd 1.8 The tofu wasn’t rough, compared to other tofupok, in spite of the spongy texture.
Softness of beancurd 1.7 Lovely for taufupok!
Taste of beancurd 1.9 It is really flavorful because it has soaked up all the wonderful juices from the pork and gravy.
Taste of meat stuffing and gravy 1.9 Full of flavor. Yum!
Texture of meat stuffing 1.8 Awesome chunky experience.

Total Score:

9.1/10

Best taufupok in town so far.

# 1 – Da Chen, Damai

The winner of the tofu eat out is from Da Chen, Damai. We just love how soft and flavorful this is. Everybody we have brought from locals to Koreans have loved the tofu. Available from 7:00am – 11:00am

Criteria Points Comments
Silkiness/Texture of beancurd 1.9 By far it is the smoothest and most consistent non-silky tofu variety we have ever had.
Softness of beancurd 1.9 Soft as silk, but this is not silken tofu.
Taste of beancurd 1.8 So fine. No funky beancurd taste.
Taste of meat stuffing and gravy 1.8 Yummy crustacean taste.
Texture of meat stuffing 1.8 The meat is chunky and soft to the bite. Yes to real meat!

Total Score:

9.2/10

The most expensive at RM1.80 per piece, but we think it is the best economy tofu in KK.

There it is, our top 5 Hakka tofus in KK!

The best Hakka tofu are still the ones made at home by aunties who chopped pork belly and prawn meat with a cleaver instead of machine-ground meat. This is a list for commercially-available economy nyong tiu fu which we like. If you know of other places in K.K. where the tofu is delicious, do share them with us in the comments section below.
