VEGETARIAN/VEGAN
We all want to get healthy these days. That’s why vegetarian food is becoming more and more in demand. If you are vegetarian by choice however, the worst thing that can happen to you is to be forced to eat meat. That is why we prepared a list of restaurants in Kota Kinabalu where you can have delicious, scrumptious Malaysian vegetarian food.*

1. Friendstar Cafe House

Friendstar Cafe House has been open for a few years. They have a vegetarian buffet that is quite affordable, but once a month, they also offer free basic food as an act of charity. It is the only vegetarian restaurant serving Western-style food using vegetarian ingredients made with soy-based mock meats, and their pastries and baked goods (particularly loaf bread), is exquisitely delicious if you like baked goods. It’s the only full-service vegetarian bakery in town that we know, and we absolutely love this place! It’s is not in the town center, but if you want to try Malaysian food without any meat in there, this is your answer!
What to try: Their bread, Coffee Town White Coffee, and all kinds of dishes that you would never otherwise have in a non vegetarian restaurant!

2. Living Seed Restaurant, Penampang

We love this place, because the food is delicious, cheap and cheerful. Where else can you get yummy mixed economy rice for RM4.50 (with brown rice as an option), and enjoy the comforts of air-conditioning and a hygienic ambiance? Easily our favorite vegetarian restaurant in KK.
What to try: We love their seaweed fried rice, tom yam, and vege curry from the mixed rice. For christmas and new year, they make their Chinese cookies. Their pineapple tarts using pure butter is heavenly!

3. City Vegetarian, Lintas

Situated in Lintas, this restaurant begins accepting swarms of hungry customers 15 minutes before it’s official opening time at 8:00am. We were shocked to see that at 7:55am, their maifun tray is empty and already the cook is frying up the refill. Their kinchi mian also has some Hakka nyong tiu foo, using vegetarian-meat in place of real-meat of course. They also have vegetarian nasi lemak, Malaysian dishes that are made to order.

4. Natural Green House, Citymall

If you find yourself in Citymall, NGH is an organic food grocer with a small kitchen and some tables at the back of their store. They make a decent fried brown rice that is scented with sesame oil, and topped with bits of chopped organic vegetables. You can also get set lunches for under RM15.
What To Try: Organic fried brown rice mmmm. If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s also a green-herb soup dish called Hakka Pestle Tea, but be warned it’s an acquired taste.

5. Wisma Merdeka Vegetarian Stall

Arguably one of the more popular vegetarian stalls in KK, you can get vegan and lacto-ovo dishes here. Try to go between 11:30am – 1:30pm if you want the food fresh, warm, and pleasant. Otherwise, freshness is a bit of a ball-toss.

6. Restoran Sayuran Good Friends, Inanam

We kind of stumbled upon this one. It’s just 2 doors down from the famous Kin Hwa roasted meat rice shop. I can’t really say much about it except that it’s a standard vegetarian coffee shop with Malaysian dishes that you can order from the kitchen, and an economy rice spread for brunch and lunch that is sans-meat.

7. Usagi Japanese Vegetarian Restaurant, Karamunsing Kompleks

For those of you who are really hungry and want better quality food, there’s a vegetarian buffet at Karamunsing Kompleks that gives you a good selection of all-you-can-eat for RM9.99 per person. We go there often, because you just can’t beat the value when you get a nice selection of dishes, fruit, salad, soups, dessert and even drinks! There’s also a vegetarian sushi conveyer belt at the back (win!). We had the luxury of sharing a meal with the owner once, who told us that he didn’t set it up to make money, but to give back to the community through practicing compassion and generosity through Buddhism. That is why it’s so cheap!

9. New Edge Vegie Café 心素馆, Penampang

If you want something a bit more sophisticated and modern, check out Beyond Veggie by Secret Recipe. It’s situated right in the heart of the city at Suria Sabah, and also at Imago Mall. Their menu consists of contemporary Western and Malaysian options. Super-convenient, chain vegetarian restaurant, but be warned – it won’t be as cheap as the other local spots!

Cheap and delicious Malaysian-Chinese vegetarian food in Centre Point featuring a selection of vegetables, mock meats, and tofu. There are many types of dishes to choose from, and they serve it mixed-rice style. Here are some other places according to HappyCow.net. On that note, happy vegging this weekend!

* Tip: Malaysian-Chinese vegetarian restaurants do not typically use onions or garlic, as vegetarianism in the country is an extension of Buddhist dietary restrictions. They eat eggs and take dairy, but no animal flesh. If you are vegan, just be specific and ask your waiter to suggest vegan options or make your food without dairy or eggs.

  1. Hi, I am going to KK at the end of OCT and would like to stay closer to vegetarian resturant so do you have any suggestion where I should stay?

  2. There’s no major vegetarian restaurants right in town, but you can always go for the vegetarian stall at Wisma Merdeka (but it closes early)! Otherwise, there are a few small hotels in the Lintas area (near City Vegetarian Restaurant) which would be great for your dietary requirements but you’d need to pretty much take a cab everywhere you want to go. You can also just pick vegetarian items from a non-vege restaurant of make special requests at eateries. Most places would be pretty accommodating! Hope that helps!

    1. I think there’s one somewhere at Kingfisher. Otherwise, at 1B they have a Hong Kong Recipe, which has an updated menu featuring vegetarian options 🙂

    2. At kingfisher there is Ah Fu vegetarian restoran, close on
      sunday. Good food. Tel: 088382263

Along the same front role of shop at kind fisher after the
hospital entrance round about there is also Easyway
vegetarian cafe that serves nice food where u can enjoy
bowls of asam laksa or curry laksa and western food.

  3. There are 2 vegetarian restaurants in Kingfisher. In the city centre, there is another one in Centre Point located at the basement.

  4. You could also try the all you can eat, tasty, and value for money vegetarian buffet and vegetarian sushi train at:

    Usagi Japanese Vegetarian Restaurant
    G76 & G77, Ground Floor, Block C, Kompleks Karamunsing
    Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia 88300
    ph: 088268011

    https://www.facebook.com/UsagiJapaneseVegetarianRestaurant

This could be regarded as a better quality vegetarian restaurant withing walking distance of the center of town.
